The Cookie Monster Lives Here

My hubby has a favorite cookie recipe that we usually make more often at Christmas time.  You know how much fun it is to smell the cookie dough with chocolate melting into those steamy mounds.  And it brings those teens out of their rooms!  Sometimes I wave the pans in the hallway, just to waft the smell under their doors.  (Just kidding, but not a bad idea, actually.  )

Anyway, Roy bought a monster-size bag of peanut red & green M&Ms for us to make that recipe.  And wouldn’t you know it; those M&Ms were gone before the cookies got made.  That Cookie Monster sure eats a lot.

We’ve got a new bag now (hidden better this time), but I’ll not be spilling sugar and flour on my freshly mopped floor right now.  I have a few hours left until the kids get home from school, and I intend to enjoy my clean house while I can!  Maybe we’ll make those cookies together tonight.  In the meantime, here’s the recipe, so you can mess up your own kitchen…oops, I meant to say, so you can treat your own cookie monsters!

Monster Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In large bowl, mix together until well blended:

1 1/3 cups packed brown sugar

¾ cup margarine or butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs, beaten with fork

 Sift together in another bowl:

2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

Add to first mixture.

1 cup M&M peanut chocolate candies

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Mix all together.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls (Hubby likes to make them monster size, but they take longer to cook and go shorter on the number of cookies they make.) about 3 inches apart onto lightly greased cookie sheet.  Press 3 or 4 additional candies on top of each cookie, if desired.  Bake until light brown, 10 to 12 minutes.  Cool slightly; remove to wire rack or paper bag.  Makes about 2 ½ dozen cookies.  (One batch is never enough for our family of four. )  Enjoy!

How about a cookie exchange?  You want to share your favorite recipe?

If you're the Cookie Monster in your house, email me at sallyswords@alltel.net and I'll forward a list from my sister!

I need to give you my wife's candy cane cookie recipe. Those are the best.

And I'm reminded of Sesame Street's new "anti-child obesity" message. Cookies are a sometimes food. I understand that we really need to take a stand against child obesity, but it makes me sad to see Cookie Monster become so reasonable about it.
