Are you having an affair?

Are your thoughts being drawn where they don’t belong?  Maybe an addiction is destroying your reasoning powers?  We tease when we say, “I’m addicted to chocolate.”  But it’s no laughing matter when something else controls you!

My husband and I have gotten addicted to a TV series this week.  We borrowed the first season from friends and have neglected sleep every night, in order to follow the story line.  Every morning, I kick myself for not getting the rest I need to function, but at night, I can’t wait to get back to the saga.

Why is an addiction so consuming?  Webster’s Dictionary says to be addicted, is “to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively.”

How did that happen?  I want to be devoted to the Lord, and to His desires for my life!  When my affections have been surrendered anywhere else, then it’s like having an affair, because I’ve left the Love of my life.

Paul knew the tug of human nature.  In Romans 7, he said “I don't understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate.” (Verse 15, NLT)

His solution?  Set your minds on what the Holy Spirit of God desires.  (Romans 8:5)  Not only that, but we are invited to cry out to God, for help to do what He wants!  (8:15-16)  And he promises that God will help us!  (8:26-27)

So hang in there.  Persevere in your difficulties, for they will not be able to separate you from the Love of God!  (8:38-39)  You CAN avoid an affair!
