“Americans Return To Their Thriftiness” (The Post-Journal, November 20, 2008, Dan Sewell, AP Business Writer) was the theme of a recent newspaper article. The writer stated that “Frugality is making a comeback.”
What steps are you taking to cut back your expenses? Less driving, more walking? Less eating out, more eating in?
This time of year, there are all kinds of holiday programs on TV. You can have a movie/popcorn night with your family and experience an alternative to what could be an expensive night out. When Ron Hutchcraft was in our area, he told us about a way that he drew his family together. He built a fire in the fireplace and turned down the heat in the rest of the house! Since we each tend to do our own thing, that might get our gang to gather. J
Hubby & I went Christmas shopping this weekend. I found out that retailers are working hard to gain the bucks with some big sales, and will probably raise the stakes, as we approach the Christmas rush.
Another way to save money is with homemade mixes. I like to give homemade items as gifts. Some years it’s bread or cookies. Sometimes it’s handmade ornaments done with cross stitch. But a gift that has a time investment involved seems to communicate a greater value. Mixes are a fun gift, as they can be used in a variety of ways. Here’s one of my favorites for Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix.
6 teaspoons chili powder
5 teaspoons paprika
4 ½ teaspoons cumin
3 teaspoons onion powder
2 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
1/8 to ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
In storage container with tight-fitting lid, combine all ingredients. This looks like pretty sand art! Seal tightly. Label with instructions to mix well before use. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. Makes 21 teaspoons (about ½ cup). Seven teaspoons of mix equal a 1.25-oz. pkg. of purchased taco seasoning mix. (Money Saving Meals, Classic Pillsbury Cookbooks, January 1992, p. 89 )
Put your mix in a basket with colorful napkins, taco shells, enchilada sauce, Doritos, and anything else you choose. You’ve got the makings for a Mexican Fiesta!
Be creative in your gift giving this year. It’ll turn into an adventure!
